ATU Local 113 Scholarships

Local 113 believes strongly in the importance of education. That’s why we have one of the most generous scholarship programs of any local union in Canada. Every year, we award dozens of scholarships to the children of our members. There are two types of scholarships available.

The Peter Bodnick Scholarship

A former lifetime member of Local 113, Peter Bodnick, now deceased, set aside funds in his Will to provide an annual scholarship of $1000 to a Local 113 member’s child who is entering a Technical/Post Secondary Registered Trades Course leading to a Skilled Trades Licence. Applicants are required to submit a written essay of not less than 500 words, and no more than 750 words, on the subject of “Organized Labour’s Contribution to the Welfare of the People of Canada.”

The 2018 scholarship will be announced shortly. For reference, you can find 2017 materials below.

The John Lorimer Memorial Scholarship

Named after a Local 113 President/Business Agent in the 1940’s, this scholarship is available to ATU 113 members’ children who are graduating from Grade 12 and who are advancing to a university degree program OR who are already enrolled in a university degree program and have not previously received a scholarship from Local 113. There are up to 38 $1,500 scholarships awarded annually. Winners are based on Grade 12 marks.

The Tommy Douglas Memorial Scholarship

Local 113 is proud to announce the Amalgamated Transit Union’s Tommy Douglas Memorial Scholarship. Tommy Douglas is an example of an exceptional Canadian – one whose commitment to fairness and the public good we try to live and work by every day. He was an activist and politician who advanced the labour movement, advocated for the Canada Pension Plan and introduced the continent’s first single-payer, universal health care program. This scholarship is open to members and their children, stepchildren and grandchildren planning to enter college, technical or vocational post-secondary school for the first time.

Deadline for application: January 31st, 2018. All details can be found: here.
