Our Local is proud to share a significant advocacy victory in the fight to prevent workplace violence against transit workers.
For several years, rising incidents of violence across the transit system have deeply affected our members and riders. Since early 2022, addressing this crisis has remained a core priority of the Executive Board and the Political Action Committee. Through coordinated advocacy, public engagement and direct government outreach, we have pushed for meaningful change at every level.
Our advocacy helped drive change by:
·      Raising public awareness through a press conference where members courageously shared their experiences with workplace violence.
·      Advancing a worker-assault motion through the City of Toronto and the TTC Board in 2022, calling for stronger protections.
·      Conducting a Health and Safety Survey in 2024 that highlighted the growing impact of workplace violence across the TTC.
·      Meeting with federal officials in Ottawa in 2024 to advocate for Criminal Code amendments recognizing assaults against transit workers.
A Federal Response – Bill C-14
Through Bill C-14, the federal government has strengthened Criminal Code protections for transit workers by recognizing assaults against transit workers as an aggravating factor during sentencing.
While legislation alone will not end workplace violence, it sends a clear message that violence against transit workers is unacceptable and will carry stronger legal consequences.
This achievement belongs to our members – especially those who shared their stories and stood together to demand change.
Our work isn’t over. We will continue advocating for stronger safety measures, enforcement, and accountability to ensure every transit worker returns home safely.
When we stand together, we make a difference.
