Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113

ATU Local 113 believes strongly in the importance of education. That’s why we have one of the most generous scholarship programs of any local in Canada. Every year, we award dozens of scholarships to the children of our members. There are four types of scholarships available:

The Peter Bodnick Scholarship
A former lifetime member of Local 113, the late Peter Bodnick, set aside funds in his will to provide an annual scholarship of $1,000 to a Local 113 member’s child entering a Technical/Post Secondary Registered Trades Course leading to a Skilled Trades Licence. Applicants are required to submit a written essay between 500-750 words on the subject of “Organized Labour’s Contribution to the Welfare of the People of Canada.”

The John Lorimer Memorial Scholarship
Named after a Local 113 President/Business Agent in the 1940’s, this scholarship is available to ATU 113 members’ children who are graduating from Grade 12 and advancing to a university degree program or who are already enrolled in a university degree program and have not previously received a scholarship from Local 113. There are up to 38 $1,500 scholarships awarded annually. Recipients are based on applicants’ Grade 12 marks.

ATU International

The 2024 James La Sala Memorial Scholarship

In memory of former international President Emeritus James La Sala, five $8,000.00 scholarships are awarded each year. A sixth $2,000.00 scholarship is available
for award, to an applicant who will attend a technical or vocational post-secondary school. The
competition is open to A TU members, their children, and grandchildren. All applicants must meet the eligibility requirements and satisfy these Rules and Procedures. For each scholarship winner, the A TU will deposit up to $8,000.00, with an accredited college or a technical or vocational post-secondary school, where the award winner will be attending.

ATU Canada

The Marcel Malboeuf Scholarship
This award was created in 2018 to honour Marcel Malboeuf — an individual who exemplified these traits throughout his career of over 48 years with the ATU. The Marcel Malboeuf Scholarship will be awarded yearly on September 13, Marcel’s birthday.

It will be awarded in the amount of $1000 to an ATU Canada member’s dependent who is enrolled in post-secondary education, and who exemplifies the highest standard in academic achievement and demonstrates commitment and dedication in their community with the utmost leadership qualities.
