In response to the TTC’s announcement of 1,200 temporary layoffs – including 1,000 of our Sisters and Brothers – ATU Local 113 sent urgent letters calling for emergency public transit funding to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Premier Doug Ford and Mayor John Tory.

We are calling on you to write and call your MP and MPP to let them know that TTC service cuts and layoffs are coming unless the federal and provincial governments provide immediate emergency financial support.

Dear [MP/MPP],
The COVID-19 pandemic has pushed the Toronto Transit Commission to the financial brink, and the agency is now looking at cutting service and laying off 1,200 essential public transit workers to make up for lost fare revenue.
Layoffs mean service cuts and cuts have consequences, especially for those essential, low-income workers who depend on the TTC every day to get to work at hospitals, nursing homes, grocery stores and pharmacies. With fewer trains and buses running, overcrowding will become more common, increasing the risk of COVID-19 spreading among our most vulnerable residents.
These cuts are a dangerous mistake and will have serious consequences for essential low-income workers who still rely on public transit to get to work during the pandemic.
Maintaining service levels and saving jobs can only happen if all levels of government step up and provide emergency financial support. I urge you to push for immediate emergency funding to protect our jobs, our health, and the future of our transit systems.
