ATU Local 113 looks forward to the new chapter of TTC leadership and we will work to help create better public transit service for all. The TTC is at a crossroad and has the opportunity to redefine itself as a progressive organization that works together with public transit workers and transit riders, values their insights and expertise, ensures transparency and public interest, prioritizes safety over savings and is willing to campaign for sustainable operational funding.
TTC workers have been on the front lines of the fight to protect public transit service. Our union’s members know what it takes to move Toronto. They have seen TTC service levels squeezed, inadequate measures for safety on public transit and how these factors and others have impacted ridership levels as well as morale of transit workers. Transit workers showed up everyday during the pandemic and were regarded as heroes. They continue to serve the city, often, beyond the scope of their duties. Yet, in the recent round of collective bargaining, Local 113 members were left to fight hard for a fair contract that offered dignity to workers and valued their work.
“TTC workers know too well how deeply the TTC has been cut,” said Local 113 President Marvin Alfred. “We’ve been fighting for years to protect service and hope the new CEO is ready to work with us. The TTC needs a champion who understands public transit service and who will fight for it.”
The union’s leadership welcomes the opportunity to meet with Gregory Percy, Interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to begin discussions and planning for the future of Toronto’s public transit and restore pride and trust in the TTC.
