At this Critical Moment for the Public Transit System, the TTC Board Must Stand-Up for Toronto

TORONTO, ONTARIO – (January 10, 2019) –  Carlos Santos, President of Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 113, released the following statement regarding the TTC Board’s inaugural meeting today:

“The TTC Board meets at a critical moment for Toronto’s public transit system. Toronto is a growing city, and for transit to remain accessible, affordable and reliable, Premier Doug Ford needs to properly fund it – not break it apart with his so-called subway upload.

Doug Ford’s upload scheme will open the door to privatization – just like we’ve seen across the Greater Toronto Area with Metrolinx. Privatization will mean higher fares and reduced service for riders. Toronto would also lose its integrated public transit system and local democratic control.

ATU Local 113 calls on all TTC Board members, Mayor John Tory and city council to stand-up for Toronto and tell Doug Ford, “Hands off our subway!”

Carlos Santos, President of ATU Local 113, is available for further comment. Following the TTC Board meeting, Carlos Santos will address TTCriders’ Rally to Stop Fare Hikes outside Toronto City Hall at 12:15 PM.
