TTC management must do more to help protect workers from violent workplace assaults
TORONTO, ONTARIO – February 9, 2022 – Marvin Alfred, President of Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 113, released the following statement in response to a violent assault against an ATU Local 113 member at Dupont Station.
“This morning, an ATU Local 113 member was stabbed at Dupont Station and is now being treated in hospital. Thankfully, the member is in stable condition.
Today’s stabbing is another reminder of the growing assault problem facing too many TTC workers every day on the job. Enough is enough: TTC management and the City of Toronto must do more to protect transit workers against violent assaults on the job. There needs to be an increase in resources and security measures on the TTC system to ensure the safety of workers and riders. This incident depicts a disturbing trend, an unacceptable rise in assaults against transit workers throughout the pandemic.
ATU Local 113 is ready to work with TTC management and the City of Toronto to find and implement solutions that will protect public transit workers.
We need immediate action on this issue. Along with the physical violence and threats, the mental and psychological impact assaults have on transit workers is severe. TTC workers shouldn’t be fearful on the job that they will be assaulted. Like everyone, Toronto’s transit workers should always feel comfortable and safe while at work.
A criminal investigation is currently underway. We’re keeping our fellow ATU Local 113 Brother in our thoughts as he recovers from this senseless attack.”
