It is with great sadness that we inform you of the death of Tom Dedes, 50, an 18-year member of our union. Tom Dedes, a subway track maintenance employee, died today at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto following a workplace accident on October 1, 2017 at McCowan Yard.

Frank Grimaldi, ATU Local 113 President; Kevin Morton, ATU Local 113 Secretary-Treasurer; John Di Nino, ATU Local 113 Executive Board Member; Pino D’Armiento, ATU Local 113 Executive Board Member; Andrew Falotico, ATU Local 113 Health and Safety Representative; and his fellow workers were at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre to pay their last respects to Tom and be with his family.

Frank Grimaldi, ATU Local 113 President, made the following statement:

“Our 11,000 members are in mourning today with the tragic death of Tom Dedes, an 18-year member of our union and a TTC subway track maintenance worker. Across the city, our members are thinking of his family and friends, including his parents and partner, Gina. Our thoughts are also with Tom’s track crew sisters and brothers at the TTC’s Greenwood Yard and McCowan Yard who are dealing with the loss of a great man who left us too soon. While our thoughts are first with his family, our union is strongly committed to the health and safety of our members. The Ontario Ministry of Labour will conduct an investigation and our union will do whatever we can to ensure such a tragedy never happens again.”

ATU Local 113 will share Tom Dedes’ funeral arrangements to members, once finalized.
